84-meter dam in Japan will be almost completely built by robots

Obayashi began to build a huge concrete dam, but due to the shortage of labor resources, the robots will be performed most of construction work.

As a result of the decline in fertility and aging of the population, Japan is forced to use robots in almost every industry. Therefore, the contractor has developed automated equipment for installing the foundation, fill the concrete for the formation of the dam housing and the execution of other works.

Almost everything on the object is controlled remotely through computers in the company’s office. In this way, engineers can control not only laying of concrete layers, but also the operation of tower cranes, the location of each individual partition, the construction process as a whole. However, for the «smooth» performance on the site, the presence of people who follow the machines and coordinate their actions.

According to the Obayashi manual, the use of automated robotic systems increases performance by only 10%, but in the end it will reduce the construction time by 30%. The company also notes that robots do not need to further train professions.

The project provides for the construction of a dam with a height of 84 m and width of 334 m in the Japanese Mission Prefecture in the south-east of the country’s main island. The object should be commissioned in March 2023.

Since in Japan, more than 35% of builders exceeds 55 years, the engineers also create
