Modern optical fiber usually has a durable glass core, in which the light loses half of its intensity after 15 km of distribution and after 300 km — it is almost impossible to detect it. Therefore, the signal must be regularly strengthened.
The team of researchers from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne has developed a new type of fiberboard with a hollow core filled with air. Due to the lower gas density, the light in it spreads much better and slower to weaken, but at the same time it becomes harder to influence it.
To solve this problem, scientists have increased air pressure inside the optical fiber. By controlling the resistance level, they were able to create uniformly located clusters of compressed gas molecules to generate a sound wave, which increases by amplitude and effectively dispels light from the source in the direction of a weakened beam, reinforcing it up to 100 thousand times.
According to developers, this technology is applicable for any type of light and gas. This solution can also be used to measure the temperature at any point of the wholesale fiber. The ability to control and delay light in the fiber on the microsecond also allows you to apply it to create temporary optical memory.
